{"id":91,"date":"2016-07-08T22:32:05","date_gmt":"2016-07-08T14:32:05","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.onramp.com.au\/?p=91"},"modified":"2024-12-09T12:24:28","modified_gmt":"2024-12-09T04:24:28","slug":"raspberry-pi-poe","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.onramp.com.au\/?p=91","title":{"rendered":"Raspberry Pi PoE"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I&#8217;ve been looking into ways of powering up Raspberry Pi computers from power-over-ethernet so as to allow them to be easily used in remote locations without the need for additional USB power supplies.<\/p>\n<p>Of course, you can power them up through the pin headers, but finding a nice regulated supply for that option was tricky too &#8211; the main advantage of the USB power input is that it has some level of protection for the Pi.<\/p>\n<p>There are a number of PoE hats for the Pi, including <a href=\"http:\/\/www.buyraspberrypi.com.au\/shop\/power-over-ethernet-poe-hat-for-the-raspberry-pi\/\">this one<\/a> which is available locally, but for $80.<\/p>\n<p>When I used to do more IP Telephony work, I used to buy adapters to power up non-PoE phones from PoE switches &#8211; specifically the Linksys POES5, now discontinued, but which can be found for $20-30 on the web:<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 383px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cisco.com\/c\/en\/us\/products\/collateral\/collaboration-endpoints\/poes5-5-volt-power-over-ethernet-splitter\/data_sheet_c78-502433.html\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/www.cisco.com\/c\/dam\/en\/us\/products\/collateral\/collaboration-endpoints\/poes5-5-volt-power-over-ethernet-splitter\/data_sheet_c78-502433.doc\/_jcr_content\/renditions\/data_sheet_c78-502433-1.jpg\" width=\"373\" height=\"282\"><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Linksys POES5<\/p><\/div>\n<p>These are capable of pushing out 5V at up to 2A from a IEEE Class 0 PoE source &#8211; perfect for a Pi (perhaps not the 3, but all the others). I didn&#8217;t have a USB cable adapter, so I modified one to do the job as a test &#8211; it&#8217;s pretty straightforward if you can solder &#8211; and it would be pretty easy, even if you can&#8217;t.
